ISI Marking Scheme
The ISI Marking Scheme is a certification system operated by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to ensure that products conform to Indian Standards (IS) for quality, safety, and reliability. Products bearing the ISI mark indicate that they have been tested and certified by BIS and comply with the prescribed standards.
The scheme applies to various products such as cement, electrical appliances, steel products, LPG cylinders, footwear, and household goods. Manufacturers must obtain a BIS license after factory inspection, product testing, and quality control assessment. Regular surveillance and sample testing are conducted to maintain compliance.
In simple terms, the ISI mark protects consumers by assuring product quality and helps manufacturers build trust and credibility in the market
Compulsory Registration Scheme
The Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) is a conformity assessment program operated by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016. The scheme was initially introduced by the Government of India in 2012 and is primarily applicable to electronics and information technology (IT) products to ensure their safety, quality, and reliability before being placed in the Indian market.
Under CRS, manufacturers—both domestic and foreign—are required to obtain BIS Registration for notified products by demonstrating compliance with the applicable Indian Standards (IS). Product samples must be tested in BIS-recognized laboratories, and registration is granted based on satisfactory test reports and evaluation of technical documentation. Unlike the ISI Marking Scheme, CRS follows a self-declaration of conformity, supported by third-party laboratory testing, without routine factory inspections at the time of grant.
CRS certification is mandatory for a wide range of products such as mobile phones, laptops, power adapters, LED lighting, televisions, set-top boxes, printers, and other electronic goods as notified by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Registered products must bear the Standard Mark with the unique Registration Number (R-number).
Professionally, the CRS plays a critical regulatory role in preventing sub-standard and unsafe electronic products, ensuring consumer protection, and aligning Indian product safety requirements with international best practices, while enabling manufacturers lawful access to the Indian electronics market.
