The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the statutory body established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, functioning under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. FSSAI regulates and supervises food safety to ensure the availability of safe, wholesome, and hygienic food for consumers.

FSSAI License / Registration

Any Food Business Operator (FBO) involved in manufacturing, processing, storage, distribution, transportation, import, or sale of food products in India must obtain FSSAI Registration or License, depending on the scale and nature of operations:

  • Basic Registration – For small food businesses and petty manufacturers
  • State License – For medium-scale businesses operating within a state
  • Central License – Mandatory for large food businesses, importers, exporters, e-commerce food operators, and businesses operating in multiple states

The license is issued with a 14-digit FSSAI License Number, which must be displayed on food packages and business premises.

Key FSSAI Compliances

FSSAI-licensed entities must adhere to continuous regulatory compliances, including:

  • Compliance with Food Safety & Standards Regulations (hygiene, labeling, packaging, additives, contaminants, etc.)
  • Implementation of Food Safety Management System (FSMS) based on hygiene and sanitation requirements
  • Annual Return / Half-Yearly Return filing (as applicable)
  • Proper labeling and nutritional information as per FSSAI norms
  • Regular food testing, internal audits, and record maintenance
  • Timely renewal of license to avoid penalties or suspension

Import & Manufacturing Compliance

  • Importers must obtain FSSAI Central License and comply with FSSAI import clearance procedures
  • Manufacturers must follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Good Hygiene Practices (GHP)

Professional Significance

FSSAI licensing and compliance ensure legal authorization to operate, consumer safety, regulatory credibility, and brand trust. Non-compliance may lead to penalties, product recalls, suspension or cancellation of license, and legal action.

From a professional and regulatory perspective, FSSAI compliance is a critical requirement for sustainable and lawful operations in India’s food business ecosystem.
